Opening Party: Saturday, November 2, 6 - 9 pm

Roos Arts is thrilled to present Gina Occhiogrosso's solo exhibition, "Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave," featuring recent paintings and her Someday Drawing Project. "Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave," is a line spoken by an old man the main character encounters on his traitorous journey in the book, The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Poetic in form, the story is known for it's cautionary tale of an unspecified apocalypse. This phrase and the book is a source for Gina Occhiogrosso's recent work depicting unsettling spaces. The images create a moment in flux or transformation, and the aftermath of this transformation is left for the viewer to complete. Gina dwells in this space to explore our own uncertain economic, environmental and political landscapes we currently live in. Just like the cryptic conversation between the two men in The Road, there are no clear answers to what the future will bring, only that we stay here until it's time.

Gina Occhiogrosso started her Someday Drawing Project in 2006 to work through ideas for new work. Each drawing was vertical and mostly on accessible letter size copy paper, 11 x 8.5 inches. Sometimes she would draw over rejection letters from jobs, art residencies and galleries. Each drawing is a snap shot of a single thought or a meditative state of purging or breathing out a stream of a moment. She continues this practice to this day and now there are hundreds of goofy, cartoony, realistic, abstract, minimal and maximal, and in various mediums. Once they are installed together in a grid, the connections are made and create an autobiographical landscape.

Gina Occhiogrosso has had several one-person shows at Nicole Fiacco Gallery, Hudson, NY; Saratoga Arts Council Art Gallery, Saratoga Springs, NY; Amrose Sable Gallery, Albany, NY; Lake George Project for the Arts, Rensselaer; and Siena College. Her group exhibition experience include: The Painting Center; The High Line; Brenda Taylor Gallery and Lana Santorelli Gallery in NYC; Pierogi, Brooklyn, NY; Miami International Airport Gallery (MIA); The Castle Gallery at the College of New Rochelle; and Lehman College Art Gallery, Bronx, NY. Gina has received several fellowships to attend the following residencies: Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Inc (VCCA); the Constance Saltonstall Foundation; and The Millay Colony for the Arts, Inc.
