Hello Stranger: Giselle Potter, Alexandra Lakin and Neal Hollinger
September 26 – October 31, 2009

Opening Reception: September 26th, 7 – 9 pm

Hours: Thursday – Saturday, 1 – 5 pm

Roos Arts presents “Hello Stranger: Giselle Potter, Alexandra Lakin and Neal Hollinger,” an exhibition consisting of portraits and landscapes. These three artists are long time friends. They have traded works, supported one another’s endeavors and shared some good times over the years.

It was Potter’s wish to have a show with Lakin and Hollinger and have the opportunity to see her work next to theirs in one space. These artists are storytellers of strange and fantastic places and people. Potter builds and collages portraits, even self-portraits that often seem suspended in time and place. She uses cutout items such as a purse or a drawer from an old magazine that create an environment familiar but not of our time. Lakin’s characters are also suspended sometimes in a cocoon like capsule surrounded by what the artist describes as “ambiguous, fractured and often subterranean spaces.” Instead of walking towards the end of a story, Lakin’s figures seem to have decided to leave their fairy tales to be preserved in a moment surrounded by abstraction. And, Hollinger’s landscapes invite the viewer to close in on the space to find a stranger world – a familiar, dream like space that is about to turn into a devouring nightmare. Looking at their imagery, it is easy to see why they would have an affinity for each other’s works. This exhibition will showcase their recent works and their collaborative “Exquisite Corpse” drawings.

Giselle Potter received her BA from Rhode Island School of Design and is a celebrated illustrator and writer of children’s books like “The Year I Didn’t Go To School” and “Wynken, Blynken and Nod”. She lives and works in Rosendale, NY.

Alexandra Lakin received an MFA from Alfred University. Recent exhibitions include group shows at Portland Art Museum in Oregon, Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany and a solo exhibition at The Front Room Gallery, Portland, Maine. She lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Neal Hollinger received his BFA from Alfred University. He lives and works in Rosendale, NY.
